Category B vehicles are cars, motorcycles, trucks, vans, buses and indeed any other type of motor vehicle where the structural damage is deemed so severe that the vehicle’s chassis and structural frame are not permitted to return to the road, but parts from the vehicle which have not been severely damaged can be taken off the vehicle and re-used in others. After salvageable parts have been removed, the chassis of the vehicle must be crushed by an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF).
Due to the extent of damage to such vehicles, it is a legal requirement that only ATFs can handle Category B vehicles, as they can pose a serious risk if returned to the road.
The regulations surrounding the purchase of Category B's mean they cannot be returned to the road, but salvageable parts from the vehicles can be used in the repair of other cars.
